The Complete Moving Guide

Selling a home these days seems to happen faster than most families expect; this happened to us last year. We had our home on the market in mid May, and it sold within ten days. Thankfully we had an entire month to pack, make arrangements, and find a new home, yikes! It all came together, and certainly wasn't as stressful as it could have been.

Moving is hard, no matter what, but it doesn't have to be complete chaos. I'm not a huge "planner", but we did have a packing plan, and it made our transition much easier.

Make A Plan

Having a plan for packing your belongings is crucial before moving into your new home. We actually had several lists, we had a list for keeping track of what we needed to take care of, like address changes, and all of the other important bank and bill related changes. We had another list for packing our belongings, beginning with the items that we didn't and wouldn't need before the move.

It's much easier to pack each room at one time, or one category at a time. Space the packing days out so you don't find yourself overwhelmed. We began with artwork, knick knacks, and holiday decor. And while we packed each category we made great efforts to get rid of stuff too.

Pack What You Love

Moving is the best time in life to get rid of the junk that is taking up the space in your closets. Purge as much as you can, it will make moving and unpacking much easier. Taking clutter from one place to the next will cost more and likely cause more stress. If you haven't used the item in the past two years you'll likely never use it. (Unless it's sentimental of course.)

Put Aside the Necessities

Once you are about a week or so from the big move, list all of the things you will need for the travel associated with the move, and the first week in your new home. These are things you'll want to pack last (mattress), or take with you in the car (clothing).

Hire Help

It's easy to justify moving all on your own, and asking your friends to help. Budgeting some money to hire a moving company will be substantially helpful, especially if you have large furniture and heavy boxes. Companies like Moving Day, Inc. will be able to help with your move.

You can decide if you just want help loading, moving, or even packing. The older we get the more we value this type of help. And your friends will thank you, (especially your friends that have trucks). :)
