A tiny spare room is always a blessing, but can often be challenging to put to use. In fact, any type of spare room, large or small, can easily become a "junk room" as opposed to a functional space. When there isn't an extra set of bedroom furniture, or perhaps all of the furniture is too large, it's hard to decide how to use this extra bonus space.

Determine a Purpose

Once you are able to determine to true purpose for your small room, the overall maintenance of the home becomes most clear. This may be a difficult determination, but ask yourself, if you were to sell your home, how you would you present this small space? Could it become a small studio/office, or perhaps a lounge with a bookshelf, and the best option for reselling the home is to style it as a bedroom. What does your home need, what does your family need space for?

Consider what you already have and give this room a purpose.

Clean Out the Junk

Once you have cleaned out the junk, begin to bring the new purpose of this room to life. What furniture will this space need? Make list of the items you'll need to fully style this space: rug, new light fixture, armchair, lamp, bookshelf, new paint, etc.

Arrange for Depth

Unless you've decided to somehow tear this room down and combine the space with another room, you'll want to do everything you can to maximize the tiny space. There are several tricks to make it look bigger than it actually is. Paint color is crucial, you'll want to choose a lighter color. Arranging furniture to not cover a window will allow more natural light, and depth. Mirrors will wonderfully open the space too.

Add Your Creativity

Maybe you're in love with maximalist decor, make this room your creative space, take a risk, and add those colorful paintings that have been sitting in the attic. If you have teenagers, give them the chance to help you add a modern touch to the space, they will surely have something to say about how the space should be decorated.

If the room is deemed "impossible", make it an organized storage space. This will still give it purpose and will be useful to your family as well.
