When Styling A Mantle

Styling the mantle, it is not easy! In our rental home we were always struggling to style the mantle. We wanted it to feel cohesive with the rest of the living room. Unfortunately we had a pinkish brown spray-painted brick (floor to ceiling), and a medium brown mantle with a semi gloss finish.

When we moved into our new home last April I was most excited about (maybe I'm exaggerating a little) our simple, white, cast stone mantle/fireplace. I was convinced that styling a mantle would no longer be an issue. I was wrong. Now all of the Christmas decor is put away and we've lined the mantle with succulents and hung a mirror above. Meanwhile, we'll be pinning inspiration and moving things around occasionally until it feels "finished" (but we're never finished right?!).

Here is a collection of inspiring mantles; these mantles are balanced and beautiful, intentionally complimenting the spaces they're in.

The chair! It brings balance, and the layered frames are a unique way of sharing varied mediums.

The antique mirror takes this bohemian space from simply boHo to boHo classic. Simultaneously, the surrounding plants keep the mirror from seeming too sophisticated giving the space a more relaxed vibe.

Nothing on the mantle! Because the TV is there (Many living spaces have to resort to this option.) there is no need to add anything, and the eyes are drawn to the beautiful tile. This folksy/modern space is cozy and minimal.

The rule of three pairs well with the matching lamps and vases. We love the mix of traditional with the natural elements (baskets and bamboo chairs and artwork of the shell).

More layered artwork, we may need to try this. And again, a chair is used to balance the large skeleton piece.

The eclectic collection of various things is intriguing in this space. It feels cozy and meaningful, as if every piece has a story.

The color and pattern of the selected pieces really fill this space with life. The floors, walls, and fireplace are all white/neutral - a palette that allows smaller pieces like the vases to speak.

The common theme...rule of threes, layered artwork and plants. It works.

Painting the fireplace and mantle the same color allows the artwork to pop. All of the color, pattern and texture in this space is complemented by the black and white photograph. Nothing is more dramatic than a black and white photo.

We love this little fireplace! The use of complimentary reds and greens bring this miniature space to life.

Isn't this fireplace and mantle just lovely? A large mirror is always a great idea, and it makes the overall space appear larger allowing more light to bounce around. Let us know if you're looking for a mirror, we know where you can find one :)…

As with most of these spaces, a white fireplace and rustic or white mantle provide a palette for various texture, color and pattern. When combined with a little layering and high/low balancing a space can really be transformed. We wouldn't mind cozying up with coffee in any of these homes.

What ideas do you have for mantle styling? What have you tried, and what's working?
