Make Home A Relaxing Space

Home should be a sanctuary, the place that we can shed our protective layers, and be uniquely who we are.

It’s merely life that gets in the way of life, and if we’re not able to connect with who we are on a daily basis, in the comfort of our homes, we lose track of what moves us and what draws closer to the desires of our hearts.

There are a few thing that can be done that will help transform your home into a sanctuary, allowing peace to grow, allowing you to grow.

Limit the Noise

Technology can be most deafening, and the silence needed to reveal the damages within us that need healing are masked by commercials, top hits, and the endless scrolling. It’s simple to make this adjustment; choosing technology free spaces in your home is one way to begin. I have requested that we remove the television from our bedroom, the bedroom is a place for rest, and how can we rest when we fall asleep with a movie on? Yes, it’s comfortable to lay down and watch a movie together, but this can happen on a comfy couch instead. Some families adopt rules that require all cell phones to be turned off during certain hours of the day, or certain days of the week. We’re able to live in greater freedom when we’re not constantly distracted with technology.

On the other side, we can’t be too extreme with our children. Technology can also be a gift, it can be that life-saving device that calms the room when the adults are trying to savor one last conversation with family. We use Netflix in the car on road trips when Ester no longer has the patience to remain strapped in her carseat. The less of an issue we make technology, the less of a desire it seems to spark. On most days she could take it or leave it, but when she asks we typically say yes. It seems to work so far.

Add A Little Luxury

Having small things like hotel slippers from Richard haworth or large things like an expensive mattress ideal for your back, can make home more relaxing. If the item is meant to bring comfort, then it’s worth investing in the quality. Throw blankets should be warm and soft, not itchy. Decorative items like vases don’t necessarily have to be expensive, as they all serve the same purpose, to hold beautiful flowers. Invest in a little bit of luxury, it will add more to your quality of life than a five night stay in Hawaii.

Have Something to Nurture

A home with natural touches will feel like home. For you it may be your five little children, and they will surely make your home come to life. If you don’t have children, consider a pet or a few house plants. Having someone or something to nurture will give your home greater purpose, and give you greater purpose within your home.

It’s similar to the nesting that pregnant women encounter towards the end of their pregnancy. When we’re needed we will often try to create an environment suitable for whatever it is in our care.

A home doesn’t need to be custom, filled with expensive furniture, or always clean to feel like a home. A home draws us in when it’s truly a home, a space that offers rest, peace, and life.
