Maintain A Beautiful Flower Garden

Having a lovely flower garden has always been one of my dreams. A home with a beautiful landscape feels that much more like a home, attracting butterflies, hummingbirds, and all of the lovely birds. While it seems overwhelming from the outside, it really doesn't have to be. Creating your own beautiful flower garden can happen, and with very little maintenance. And I promise, you won't need to hire a landscape architect (unless you want to of course).

Contact Allen Outdoor or another business near you for advice on the types of plants that do extremely well in your zone. Otherwise, internet research is immensely helpful. The easiest way to get started may be to simply visit your nearby nursery. Perennials are always best to start with, because they'll come back next year, and you'll be able to establish your flower garden year after year. Several perennials, especially those that are native to your planting zone will require minimal effort to keep in shape.

For example, we planted several blanket flower plants, and can already tell that they're going to withstand almost any type of weather. We had a terrible hailstorm last month, our plants looked destroyed, but the blanket flower is already recovered and in full bloom again.

Once you've decided on which plants that you'd prefer to begin with, choose a small area to begin with. If you have a yard full of weeds, avoid feeling overwhelmed, and focus on one 10x10 little spot in your garden. Prepare your soil if needed, pull the weeds, add a small stone barrier, and begin to plant. You may even consider one type of plant to fill this entire area. I wouldn't mind an entire section of our yard to be full of Shasta daisies, they're lovely.

Several perennials bloom spring, summer, and fall, and these are what I always look for. This gives you three seasons of color.

As you've grown comfortable with one area of your garden, begin to add more. Face your chairs towards your flowers, pop up your umbrella, and enjoy your beautiful space. And within a few years, you'll grow in confidence and your garden will begin to thrive.

If you're wanting a bit more color without excess maintenance, consider planting 5-10 pots with annuals. These are less expensive and they can add beautiful colors to your patio.

It's exciting to head to the nursery and purchase all of the beautiful plants, but this can often result in dead plants, especially through the hottest months of the summer. Start small, focus on a few plants to master, and in time, your garden will thrive.
