Giving Your Home Personality

Moving to a new home is one of the most exciting transitions in life. For some it happens all too often, and for others it's a rare occurrence, but it's always nice to have a fresh start. While moving can be stressful, and sometimes, unwanted, there is always reason to embrace the anxiety around "starting over".

Walking into a bare home that is yours to personalize can overwhelm and inspire. Making your home a reflection of who you are is the first step to making home feel like home.

Bring What You Love

Moving is probably the best time to organize and purge your belongings. If you have the time to work through your belongings and pack only what you love, moving and unpacking will be a smoother process. With our recent move from Texas to Colorado we packed our belongings slowly and strategically. We had an area in our previous home to gather the things we no longer wanted, and family/friends would come over and take anything that they liked. We also sold a few items on websites like Craigslist. We packed our belongs in "need order". Knick knacks, artwork, keepsakes, and related items were packed first, and we waited to pack our clothing and kitchen in the last days. Companies like http://www.melbcheapsuburbmovers.com.au/ are helpful with both moving and large item removals (like furniture you no longer need).

Consider Paint

Painting is substantially easer when you haven't moved all of your belongings into your new space. Often people will choose paint colors based on "resale value", but you're likely going to be in your space for a while, so choose the colors that you like. Don't worry too much about selling your home when you're just moving in.

Paint the kitchen yellow, or add wallpaper to your baby's room. And if your daughter wants those pink walls, indulge her, it's only paint.

Decorate With Your History

Your choice of artwork, treasures, and collections should be personal to your family and you.

Choose items that have meaning, value, or a personal story behind them. This will not only make your home more intriguing for guests, but it keeps your home connected to who you are. Family photos can be displayed in a variety of creative ways, and are the ideal storytellers, especially your favorite candids.

Plant Life

Houseplants are the best pets to keep around. They quickly add life to a home that is still coming together. It's easy to start with a few plants near your south/west facing windows, and as you get comfortable, add them in other areas. Fill your home with pieces that matter.
