There are several various lighting options that can be added to your backyard space. Motion sensing lights (these can be awfully bright), solar lighting, candle lanterns, and string lights are all cost-effective options available at most hardware stores. Citronella candles can have the joint purpose of warding off mosquitoes and providing a warm, dim light. 

Warmth is also a necessity, especially in the desert climates that cool during the evenings. Chimineas and fire pits are lovely and perfect for gathering together. Keeping a chest of warm wool blankets is also a simple way to warm up on a starry evening.
