While travel is exciting and wonderful, leaving home can be a little worrisome. We try not to worry about intruders, and we do what we can to make our home as secure as possible.
The most important steps to securing our home are the simplest ones: telling a trusted neighbor, unplugging lamps and appliances, leaving a light on, and locking our windows and doors.
Taking a few extra precautions can bring one's anxiety to a rest.

Cameras
CCTV cameras are great at deterring unwanted people from your property; the mere sight of a camera is enough to scare off potential burglars. If you get a CCTV camera with wifi connectivity, you can check the app to see if anything suspicious has occurred around your home.
Investing in home tech, like cameras, is another step to feeling secure, even when your family is warmly tucked inside your home.

Lights
You will not be wasting loads of electricity if you set one or two of your lights to operate on a timer. A lamp will work, but a safer option would be an actual light switch in your home, and your porch light.
Giving the illusion that people are in your home at night (I always think of the movie Home Alone) will help keep suspicions low.

Safes
We hope to purchase a safe soon. Not only are they great at securing treasures from burglars, but they also prevent damage to precious keepsakes in the event of a natural disaster or flood. You can view safes here and see that there are many varieties.
A safe is also wonderful because you no longer have to go hunting for those personal documents in the filing cabinet, like social security cards and birth certificates.

Alarm
If you have a working alarm system you'll want to check that it's operating properly before leaving town. Why pay for a service that isn't helpful in the time of need? If you're deciding whether or not to purchase an alarm service, consult with your neighbors first. Not every neighborhood warrants this expense. If it brings you a peace that you need to rest easy at night, home or away, it's probably worthwhile.
