It's rather obvious that our bedrooms should promote rest. Unfortunately the bedrooms in our homes often struggle to promote this rest that we desperately need. We invest in expensive vacations, stylish couches, and various home projects, but struggle to budget for a quality mattress. We make sure the kitchen is clean at night before bed, but our bedroom floor is covered with laundry and toys. Our bedrooms need to be a priority.

When our bedrooms draw us in, we will rest deeper.

Tone

Our bedrooms should carry a tone of rest. We can use color to great effect and create a beautiful space for deep sleep. Sam and I prefer that our bedroom has neutral tones, minimal color (unlike the rest of our home), and open space. Our bed is low to the ground, platform style, making the room appear larger. We like our bedroom to have an airy feel. We chose to not place desks and dressers in our bedroom either, keeping the clutter away.

Others prefer a darker bedroom, with rich, deep color that soothes and calms the mind. Dark blues or deep reds are beautiful bedroom colors, and provide a sense of quiet intimacy.

Lighting

Bedrooms should be lit with lamplight in the evening, unless you're installing shelving and need the bright overhead lighting to see. During the day, a bedroom can be filled with soothing natural light, which gives the space a lovely airy feel, perfect for an afternoon nap. Lighting is important, and too much light will hinder our rest. If you're a family that prefers TV in the bedroom, be sure to leave a low light (lamp) on somewhere in the room. TV light is harsh, and interrupts our sleep, be sure to set the sleep timer before dozing off.

String lighting is an often forgotten touch that can give a bedroom a youthful and warm feel.

The Bed

The bed is the most important piece of furniture in our homes.

Sam and I invested in a Tempur-Pedic about four years ago, and while it has been comfortable, it may be time for something different. We chose a mattress that wasn't firm enough, rookies I suppose. It's important to invest in the best memory foam mattress, or something that gives your back, shoulders, and neck the support that they need.

Whether it's your kitchen, your living room, or any other room in your house, consider what each room needs. Room by room, we can truly establish the sanctuary that we lovingly call, "home".
