Five Ways to Create A Healthier Home

Hurd & Honey

We all have poor habits when it comes to our overall health, whether we spend too much time worrying, we drink more coffee than necessary, or perhaps we overeat. We all struggle in some way, it's part of our imperfect human condition. The deeper issues that we must face take time to resolve, perhaps a lifetime, but creating a healthier home environment can take place rather quickly. . You may have stopped smoking recently, but the chemicals in cigarettes can be equally as harmful as the chemicals in our homes. It's often overlooked, but strong chemicals in the home can do damage to your lung condition.

Open Your Windows

During the summertime this may seem impossible, but even for just fifteen minutes, get your windows opened, and let your home "breathe". This is one of those things that can be done to take steps to boost your immune system, along with getting yourself outdoors. Opening the windows will allow toxins a path of escape, but psychologically it will also improve one's mood, and allow light to filter in.

Thinking back to life before air conditioning, families kept windows and doorways open, even during the summertime. Perhaps their quality of life was much improved.

Invest in A Healthier Mattress

I am a huge advocate for natural aging, I find the aging process to be beautiful, wrinkles are a sign of living life. But I do believe that we will age with more grace if we choose to value our rest. Hundreds of years ago it was believed that one path to maintain a youthful appearance was through adequate rest. As a society, we are exhausted, always on devices, never truly resting. Ironically we're spending more and more money on anti-aging products as opposed to simply resting.

Investing in a mattress that is chemical-free, organic, or "healthier" is the first step to better rest. It's a worthwhile investment.

Clean Without Harmful Chemicals

We don't have any excuse to continue to use chemically-laden cleaners when we have resources like Pinterest to provide endless recipes for natural cleaning. It is true that some natural cleaners work better than others, and it may take some time to figure out what works best in your home. And if you're finding that you don't have time to make your own, you can always start with a healthier cleaning option like Mrs. Meyers or Method. They still have chemicals in their products, but they're not nearly as harmful.

Organize Your Home

Some of us do thrive in a mess, but nobody can thrive in endless chaos. We all need organization in areas of our lives to feel sane. Start with the area that challenges your peace the greatest, maybe it's your bedroom closet, maybe it's so cluttered that it makes getting dressed each morning nearly impossible. For me personally, if the kitchen and pantry aren't clean and organized I struggle to make dinner consistently. It's uninspiring, and overwhelming. We eat healthier when the kitchen is better organized.

Fill Your Home With Plants

House plants are much easier than outdoor plants, because they're not subject to the changing outdoor conditions. Make it a goal to keep houseplants in every room of your home, filtering the air, and making your home more beautiful.
